developments after a devastating earthquake in the eastern province of
Van, the Cyprus talks and the world's symbolic “seven billionth” babies.
Hürriyet daily reported that Sakarya Governor Mustafa Büyük said what happened in the eastern province of Van, referring to a devastating quake, and statements made by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan that the government would destroy all buildings that have been illegally constructed has boosted common sense. The daily quoted Büyük as saying most of buildings damaged by the Marmara quake in 1999 would be destroyed within the next two years.
A Sabah daily headline read “Mafia PKK” for a story about police confiscating eight tons of hashish buried in the ground in the town of Lice, Diyarbakir, adding that the market value of the haul was about TL 28 million. The daily quoted Diyarbakir Governor Mustafa Toprak as saying it was a great blow to the financial sources of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorist organization.
Milliyet daily wrote that the UN has chosen the world's symbolic “seven billionth” babies from every country to mark the world's population reaching 7 billion people. Turkey welcomed Yusuf Efe Özkan, who was born in Ankara, as one of the world's symbolic “seven billionth” babies. Zaman daily reported that the UN would be granting scholarship to these babies.
Vatan reported that Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot parties gathered in New York and reached compromise on a plan for the first time. According to the plan, Cyprus will be united by June 2012 and Turkish Cypriots will constitute one-fourth of parliament.
The Türkiye daily said Turkish Prime Minister Erdoğan would pay a visit to Germany to attend celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of Turkish-German labor recruitment, stating that Erdoğan would attend ceremonies in Germany and then proceed to France to participate in the G-20 Summit.
Türkiye also reported that aid from 80 provinces in Turkey had been sent to Van and that 200 trucks loaded with humanitarian aid arrive in Van every day.
